“The US has decided to exercise policy of containment on ISIL in order to be able to use this terrorist group as a tool for its future purposes”, said Kazem Jalali, Head of the Islamic Parliament Research Center”.
He made the remarks yesterday (2nd December) addressing the Seminar entitled “An analytical study on the formation of ISIS and its regional consequences” held at Geographical Science Faculty of Kharazmi University.
Also present at this Seminar was Y.Rahim Safavi, Assistant and Senior Advisor to the Supreme Leader and Commander in Chief of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
At this Seminar which was focused on the factors leading to the emergence of ISIL, Dr. Jalali drew attention of the audience to a brief chronicle of the formation of terrorist groups in the region and said “When Leonid Brezhnev, the leader of the Soviet Union ordered his army to attack Afghanistan, never could think of the war that he set ablaze would continue for the next half a century”.
Head of the IPRC further touched on the very roots of the emergence of the extremism in the region following the end of cold war and disruption of the USSR.
He then referred to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center which was followed by certain unexpected US attacks on Afghanistan. The aftermath of the US attacks against Afghanistan and Iraq brought about some drastic changes in the region leading to the emergence of the new extremist groups as ISIL.
In reply to a question about the current US policy against ISIL despite its involvement in the formation of such a terrorist group, Jalali said” An analysis of the Washington’s policies in the international arena can easily reveal the US U-turn on ISIL.
Some reasons for early US support of ISIL and later formation of anti- ISIL coalition can be attributed to the US political gesture for gaining international prestige at the expense of weakening Iran’s position in the region, separation and or federalization of certain regions in the Middle East”, Jalali concluded.
